Report on March Summer Festival 2004

Report from the Fenland Citizen Wednesday June 9 2004 by  Amy Collett

The people of March have been paid a huge thank you for helping make the weekend’s Summer Festival a wonderful success. Former mayor Bernard Keane, chairman of the festival committee, said “great numbers” turned out to support the event, which coincided with festivities to mark the 60th anniversary of the D-Day Landings.

“If we did not get the public support, it is all a waste of time, but support we got!” he said.

The action-packed festival kicked off on Friday with local bands performing on stage in West End Park.

On Saturday there was a ‘War Years’ themed parade, led by carnival princess Charlotte Randall and her attendant Georgia Winslow, D-Day veterans and the Mayor and Mayoress of March, Kit and Beverley Owen.

There was more music in the park, along with performances from Dance Mania Group, fancy dress and games and competitions for all ages.

On Sunday there was a picnic in West End Park, with live acts and entertainment for children.

The spectacular grand finale, with the 85-strong Fenland Youth Orchestra, was a Last Night of the Proms evening.
